PASSAU - GERMANY

PASSAU
THE THREE RIVERS CITY

Passau, a German city on the Austrian border, lies at the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers.

Known as the Three Rivers City, it’s overlooked by the Veste Oberhaus, a 13th-century hilltop fortress housing a city museum and observation tower.

The old town below is known for its baroque architecture, including St. Stephen’s Cathedral, featuring distinctive onion-domed towers and an organ with 17,974 pipes.

vienna - austria

vienna
capital city OF AUSTRIA

Vienna, Austria’s capital, lies in the country’s east on the Danube River.

Its artistic and intellectual legacy was shaped by residents including Mozart, Beethoven and Sigmund Freud.

The city is also known for its Imperial palaces, including Schönbrunn, the Habsburgs’ summer residence.

In the Museums Quartier district, historic and contemporary buildings display works by Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt and other artists.

optional CITY TOUR / walking tour

Details of the tour if you purchase the excursion package.

Today the tradition-rich Danube metropolis Vienna is on the program.

From the pier you will pass the “New Vienna” with the Uno-City and the Danube Island.

See imposing magnificent buildings such as the State Opera, the Burgtheater, the Hofburg, the Parliament, the City Hall and the Votivkirche during the trip along the famous Ringstrasse.

During a guided tour afterwards, you will experience this charming city and its world-famous “Viennese Schmäh” at first hand.

After a short free time, you will pass the Praterstern and return to your ship.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS

I’ve not listed every single Christmas market in the city, but these are the most popular and central ones…

Christkindlmarkt

This is the most visited and famous Christmas market, located in front of the imposing Rathaus city hall. Last time out, a notably wider layout may spread the crowds out somewhat.

A large Christmas tree dominates the centre with dozens of surrounding stalls offering the full spectrum of seasonal offerings.

The adjacent park either side of the square has plenty of advent surprises, too. For example, look out for the instagrammable tree full of glowing hearts or the lighted open-air ice skating routes.

For a good photo of everything, cross the road at the main entrance and stand on the steps of the Burgtheater building opposite.

Schönbrunn

Hard to beat in terms of elegant and stylish backdrops. This market forms up in the forecourt of Schönbrunn Palace, with its giant Christmas tree and imperial splendour. Also a particular favourite of mine.

The stalls here always seem strong on quality, so a fine place to pick up gifts and those little bits and pieces that make life a better place even if you don’t really need them. Also convenient for the palace concerts.

The market changed hands in 2024 and added ice skating, curling and other family-friendly offerings to the usual booths.

BELVEDERE

Not the largest market and a little away from the centre, so fewer crowds usually gather here than at most other alternatives.

Perhaps the biggest pull is the gorgeous location: in front of the early 18th-century Upper Belvedere palace and next to a small lake, offering a glorious photo opportunity at dusk.

Stephansplatz

This Christmas market is about as central as they come since it curls around the outside of Stephansdom.

The cathedral makes a wonderful backdrop, and the market allows you to refresh yourself after strolling through the pedestrianised centre of Vienna.

One end of the market actually meets the parking spot for the horse-drawn carriages that ply their trade in town, which adds another level of historical atmosphere to proceedings.

BUDAPEST - HUNGARY

BUDAPEST
capital city OF HUNGARY

Budapest, Hungary’s capital, is bisected by the River Danube.

Its 19th-century Chain Bridge connects the hilly Buda district with flat Pest.

A funicular runs up Castle Hill to Buda’s Old Town, where the Budapest History Museum traces city life from Roman times onward.

Trinity Square is home to 13th-century Matthias Church and the turrets of the Fishermen’s Bastion, which offer sweeping views.

optional CITY TOUR / walking tour

Details of the tour if you purchase the excursion package.

Budapest is certainly one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and bears the nickname “Queen of the Danube” not without reason.

The Danube divides the Hungarian metropolis into the districts of Buda and Pest.

You will first drive through the city center and enjoy the flair of the city.

Enjoy a beautiful view of the Buda Castle, Fishermen’s Bastion and Matthias Church, which still remind of the glory of past times.

Also a small visit to the famous Budapest market hall may not be missing, of course.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS

The two city central markets have been attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors, and are the most spectacular.

You will find beautiful quality handcrafts, and special Hungarian Delicacies (e.g Chimney Cake) at the Budapest Basilica Christmas Fair.

Location: St Stephen’s Sq, Budapest, District V

Highlights:

• Free Entry

• Food Stalls

• Handicraft Shops

• Christmas Laser Projection on the Basilica

• Skating Rink with Skate Rental

• Voted among the top European Christmas Markets in the last 4 years

• Celebrate the Advent Candle Lighting

The most beautiful, oldest and internationally acclaimed Budapest Christmas fair is the Christmas Market on Vorosmarty Squarein the heart of the city (since 1998).

Location: Vorosmarty Sq, Budapest, District V

Highlights:

• Free Entry

• Food Stalls

• Handicraft Shops

• Joins with the richly illuminated Fashion Street

• Ceramic Christmas mugs (or paper)

BRATISLAVA - SLOVAKIA

BRATISLAVA
capital city OF SLOVAKIA

Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is set along the Danube River by the border with Austria and Hungary.

It’s surrounded by vineyards and the Little Carpathian mountains, crisscrossed with forested hiking and cycling trails.

The pedestrian-only, 18th-century old town is known for its lively bars and cafes.

Perched atop a hill, the reconstructed Bratislava Castle overlooks old town and the Danube.

optional CITY TOUR / walking tour

Details of the tour if you purchase the excursion package.

Bratislava is located in the fertile Danube plain south of the Small Carpathians in the immediate vicinity of the borders with Austria and Hungary.

The Slovakian capital could be aptly described as “small but nice”.

The old town has been magnificently renovated with great attention to detail.

During your sightseeing tour of Bratislava, you will first drive through the embassy district to the castle (Hrad), which towers high above the city and is considered the city’s landmark.

There you will make a photo stop and enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the city.

Here you will also get more detailed information about the eventful history of the castle, which was the residence of numerous Hungarian kings for a long time before Maria Theresa settled there and the castle experienced its heyday.

Afterwards, you will continue to the Old Town and begin the walking tour.

Walking together through the Old Town of Bratislava, you will see the Redoubt, the National Theater, the City Hall and some Baroque palaces and the city gates that testify to the k.u.k. Monarchy.

Among other things, you will also meet the most famous man of Bratislava, Gullimann Cumil.

CHRISTMAS MARKETS

The two city central markets have been attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors, and are the most spectacular.

MAIN CHRISTMAS MARKET

The light up streets with Christmas decorations are especially enchanting in the evening.

In addition, the Christmas Market enrich the Advent season in Bratislava.

For many years, a beautiful Christmas tree inseparably belongs to the local Christmas hue of Bratislava.

In old Bratislava, it was not only a symbol of Christmas, but also of human fellowship, which the locals perceived as the main message of the holidays.

In addition to traditional Christmas dishes, the stalls at the Christmas market will also offer exotic flavors, which will appeal to both vegans and vegans.

One end of the market actually meets the parking spot for the horse-drawn carriages that ply their trade in town, which adds another level of historical atmosphere to proceedings.

OLD TOWN

Plenty of stalls, a decorated Christmas tree and a Christmas hill with a maze.

Traditional Old Town Christmas Market will be located on Hviezdoslav Square in the heart of Bratislava’s Old Town just a minute away from the Christmas Markets at the Main Square.

Markets will be enriched by an accompanying programme and more than 30 stands.

They will not lack snacks in the form of traditional culinary delights and drinks, there will also be a selection of various types of souvenirs, Christmas presents and craft products.

MELK - AUSTRIA

MELK
THE FAMOUS MELK ABBEY

Melk is an Austrian town on the River Danube, west of Vienna.

It’s known for the 11th-century Melk Abbey, a vast monastery built high above the town.

Gold statuary adorns its domed Abbey Church, and the huge library houses medieval manuscripts.

The Marmorsaal is a baroque hall with a ceiling fresco and red marble walls. South of Melk, gardens surround Renaissance Schallaburg Castle, which hosts cultural exhibitions.

optional CITY TOUR / walking tour

Details of the tour if you purchase the excursion package.

The baroque Benedictine Abbey of Melk towers impressively above the town at the entrance to the Danube in the Wachau region.

Melk has been a spiritual and cultural center of the country for more than 1,000 years.

The monastery has become literarily known, among other things, through Umberto Eco’s novel “The Name of the Rose”.

The imposing baroque building is a visible expression of the importance of the monastery in the baroque period.

A guided tour through the monastery will impressively convey the former importance of the monastery.

Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to explore the grounds yourself before the bus picks you up again and takes you back to the ship.
